THURSDAY’S SCHOOL ROUNDUP

Newton North girls’ volleyball holds off Brookline

Fresh off a third-place finish at the VolleyHall Classic on Columbus Day, third-ranked Newton North held off No. 13 Brookline in four sets — 21-25, 25-11, 25-18, 25-19 — to maintain its lead atop the Bay State Conference standings (8-2 overall, 8-1 conference).

“We were still feeling the doldrums [from Monday] and it was very apparent in the first set,” said Newton North coach Richard Barton, whose team made 13 attacking errors in the first frame. “Their bodies woke up in the second set and we were able to take control from there.”

Ashley Wang and Chelsea Simmons finished with eight kills apiece and Tessa Lanfear added 18 service points to lead the way, while the Tigers limited Brookline standout Natalija Beslic defensively, coming up with seven block kills against her and the Warriors (7-3, 6-3).

“[Beslic] hits very hard for them,” said Barton. “She was very effective from the back row for them, but we did a good job limiting her attacks when she was in the front row.”
